Bank Audi
Incorporated in Lebanon under its present legal form in 1962, Bank Audi sal is today a universal bank present in 10 countries offering a full range of Commercial, Retail, Private and Investment Banking activities, as well as “Bancassurance” products. The Bank’s local and regional presence is consolidated through 9 banks, 1 investment company and 2 insurance companies.
Bank Audi sal has the largest branch network in Lebanon with 78 branches as at end-September 2009, as along with a network of 10 branches in Jordan and a representative office in Abu Dhabi – United Arab Emirates. The Bank also has 3 subsidiaries in Lebanon, 2 in Europe and 5 in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region outside Lebanon. Following a string of mergers and acquisitions – the latest of which occurred with “Banque Saradar sal” in 2004 – coupled with a dynamic organic expansion, Bank Audi sal is now the largest Bank in Lebanon by far and ranks among the top 20 Arab banking groups in the MENA region.
By the end of the past 10 years, Bank Audi sal engaged in a comprehensive business diversification strategy that expanded its business offering from traditional core commercial banking activity to all activities catered by a universal bank. Building on the success of this course, the Bank embarked in the middle of the decade on a dynamic regional expansion strategy towards countries with promising development perspectives, in 3 main regions of the MENA region and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Beyond its historical presence in Lebanon, France and Switzerland, the Bank has now extended its operations to Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. In support of those strategies, Management frontloaded a significant investment for upgrading its IT infrastructures and developing its human capital, as well as expanding its network, principally in Lebanon and the MENA region to total 152 branches today.
The results of those strategies consist of sustained 2-digit growth rates in assets and earnings over the last 5 years, while maintaining good asset quality, adequate capitalization and ample liquidity. As at end-September 2009, the Bank’s consolidated assets stood at US$ 24.7 billion, rising to US$ 34.3 billion when accounting for off-balance sheet accounts. Assets of Bank Audi sal were mainly triggered by private customers’ deposits standing at US$ 21.3 billion. At the same date, shareholder equity stood at US$ 2.1 billion, translating into a Basel II capital ratio of 11.4%. Primary liquidity with banks represented 44% of consolidated assets, one of the highest levels in the world, while net NPLs represented 0.50% of gross loans – a clear indication of the strong quality of the Bank’s loan portfolio.
The Bank’s regional expansion strategy is still underway, with plausible perspectives in North Africa and Yemen. The aim of this strategy continues to be the achievement of a more balanced activity structure between Lebanon and abroad, as well as the reinforcement of the Group’s global immunity and its rating.
